I've read this yesterday but from what I understood it's not that interesting. The current WIP version of Bennu remains superior in any way I can think of, not to mention it's opensource and free.

Still nice people making an effort for this, though.

Hmmm, yes. I've just had a play with it and it's not exactly a "studio" as I hoped...

But it's definitely pretty cool to be playing those old DIV games again :)

The difference seems to be that this plays DIV games near enough out of the box.

Myself and Frim have just been going through all his old games, the ones we have source for anyway, and it seems nearly flawless. Apart from the fact that there's no networking stuff, and we haven't been able to test if it has any Mode 8 because of that.

It's pretty good though, it spits out .exes, so we could replace all the DOS DIV games on this site with Windows versions if we have the source for them.

Well it may just be the games that came with it, but they all seemed really unresponsive, and I really really do not want to run "SHAG.PRG"

I tried it yesterday too, and my first RTS compiled and ran without any problems. I also like how it outputs executables and I think it also should be mentioned the IDE (albeit really a minimal application) is fully in English, which really is excellent for software that comes from Spain. It's good as enrichment for the Bennu/Fenix/DIV scene, but except for playing/compiling old DIV games it doesn't seem greatly useful for anything yet.

If the makers want people to actively use this language they certainly should be working towards making it Fenix/Bennu compatible, because right now those are far ahead (besides the fact that Gemix has 32 bit colors), and I doubt anyone will go back from Fenix/Bennu to a DIV 2 clone. I think this also should have priority over implementing 3D or networking.

While it would really be a pity, they might get a whole lot of legal problems if they attempt to commercially exploit this on their own, because they fully cloned DIV, they are bundling all official example programs that came with DIV 2, they use the DIV font, and they don't have a license to justify their MP3 functionality. In order for this to work they should probably pair up with Avanquest, which as far as I know currently holds the rights to DIV. This would be a win-win situation - a lot of legal trouble would be cleared and Avanquest could distribute Gemix studio in the UK and possibly other parts of Europe.

3 out of 4 DIV games on this website are Frimkron's. :D

The current version of Bennu supports 32bit as well, but this version is not yet released publicly.

Do you really think that Avanquest would invest the money necessary to distribute a piece of software with such a small niche that you could probably count the people in the UK who would buy it on release on two hands?

That's not risk, that's just throwing money away.

Fasttrak distributed DIV and DIV 2 with success, no? And what about the other successful game programming languages? Sure the market for game programming languages might be relatively small, but there's obviously a market for it.

Now whether Avanquest will pair up with the makers of Gemix Studio is up to both parties, I am only saying that for it to work out well legally the Gemix folks could attempt to pair up with Avanquest. Alternatively they could attempt to buy a license or buy the rights.

In order for the Gemix makers to be attractive to a publisher in the first place of course their piece of software should be able to compete - the finished product might well end up not be, and in its current form it won't stand a chance, but since it's intended to be a commercial product the makers will probably strive for it. It is not finished yet and they still have to implement 3D functions, so who knows.

Note from the Gemix Studio authors

Gemix is only 'a language' to be a part on the Gemix Studio.
Others more advanced Div-Style will be present on the final product. This beta is only to show the product to the people and to allow the maximun number of them to test the most big number of programs to know the possible bugs and other minor issues.

Also the final IDE will not be the one on the beta because an advanced one is actually a work in progress.

If it is necessary to look for agreements between Avanquest and the authors, it will do.

Please have patience since the development of all this is very long and hard.

Thanx

Just to give a little more info on the current situation (you might know this already): Fasttrak, the company that distributed DIV 1 and DIV 2 in the UK, bought the world wide rights to DIV in 2001. Then Avanquest bought Fasttrak.

Does network also implies TCP/IP and internet networking. I remember that DIV2 only had LAN possibilities...
