I'm working on a new layout for the site (you can see the WIP version by setting the layout in your profile settins to "buttdance").

But Ferret is arguing about the fact that it's fixed width. Now Ferret will probably post a load of propaganda about why fixed width supposedly sucks so before that happens I'm going to post some links to sites where this age old arguement has been taking place, so that we can all see other people's sides of things and hopefully quash any stupid little biases we have for whatever reason, before coming to our own conclusions for this site's layout.

Ok so - the links - take a look everybody:

http://www.molly.com/2005/04/1 … eating-goes-on/

Ok I'm bored now.

So, with all this in mind, lets discuss maturely and reasonably the pros and cons of each method of layout design and what our own preferences are, bearing in mind your own screen resolution, and without using the words "sucks", "retard", "shit", "wtf stfu" or "Colin Mochrie".

You have a lot more graphical freedom when you make a fixed width design.

I supose that people would just pick a design that isn't fixed width, if they don't like it for that reason...

By the way, I think you already know about it, but the width isn't the same on every page (especially the profile page). But since it's still in development, as I said you probably know about it already. Just like you probably know about it that the google adds don't fit well...

Yes a lot of things are throwing it off - the google ads, game thumbnails, large textareas. I was determined to make it work though, if that's the method agreed on.

Yes you're right PB people could just change the layout if they wanted. Though we have to take into account the fact that, with Woody's permission, this would be the default layout visible to unregistered visitors. In other words peoples' first impression of the site.

The fishstick layout is the best anyway. I think fixed width. I don't have a horizontal scroll wheel do I?

Off topic - the new mac mouse has a wheel that scrolls horizontally apparently. I've not seen it but in my day we called those trackballs.

You missunderstand, a fixed width is more likely to need a horizontal scroll feature, a variable width will stretch to the current size of your window, be it in full screen, or in a smaller window, and regardless of what resolution or platform you are viewing the page on.

But it will also stretch areas of text making paragraphs into single lines and leave ugly empty spaces.

There needs to be a limit on text size - that's just reminded me.

Some people prefer fixed-width sites. Others prefer fluid designs. Touting one as "better" than the other is nonsense. Buttdance is pretty cool, but it DOES mess up the layout.

Oh and pictures jammed into miniscule iframes on the forum look ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS.

And what would fix it and make every style work in conjunction with each other? Oh! Variable widths!

I think I'm just going to stand out the way and let you two argue it out amongst yourselves.

They're not iframes, they are scrollbars that are added by CSS in the event that the picture is too big for the forum layout. Stops it streching all over the place when someone puts on a 3000x3000 image.

Ferret didn't do those image tags how I asked. I wanted a max width and height for posted images and if they're bigger than that, they're scaled down and made into a link to the image on its own.

Hi everybody.

I've more or less finished my new layout now. You can see it by setting your style to Souperguy in your profile.

I'm told that my monitor has a mad contrast setting to I'll be tweaking the colour on the layout soon. There's also some bits of text that you can see through for some weird reason so I'll sort that out too. And yes some of the headers are a bit buggered up. That's going to get fixed too.

Its tested in the latest version of IE and Firefox only so far. Hope you all like green lol

Enjoy!!!!!!!!!1

And it's a million times better than Aqua, I vote for making it the default now.

Yeah I like it too. It must be good if I switched over from 'Fishstick2' to it.

Cool theme. Too bad the site structure had to be butchered. :'(

I'm still trying to figure out why the quick reply tables were messed with.

I like the theme a lot, but the font colour for forum messages and such should be quite a bit brighter for readabillity on a laptop.
