Go on DM, just a few perfectly reasonable reasons. Go on.
Don't cite anything to do with price either, when compared to rival companies products of similar quality and features they're actually quite cheap.

No they aren't they are at least 30% more expensive but this depends on where you buy it obviously. Creative's are better.

They tie you into iTunes, which shoves you down on your knees and has its way with you whenever Steve Jobs feels like having more money.

Woody is right about that.

And Ipods are a lot less functional than for example Iriver products, which are less expensive too. Though on the other hand Ipods have cool little extras like games. There's nothing wrong with Ipods in general, they look good and keep the mass happy.

It's Mac OS that can really make me cry.

iPods do NOT tie you into iTunes at all, there are a crap load of alternative software you can use, and even then you have to if you don't run Windows/Mac.

Plus, there's nothing wrong with iTunes anyway! O_o The only thing it's doing on my PC is being opened by myself whenever I want to sync my iPod. I don't use it for anything else and it doesn't do anything else as far as I'm concerned, the only downside is that it thinks it's a fun idea to install Quicktime, but that's easily subdued.

Retep: Where do you shop?

As for "Cool little extras"-

Yeah, playing Doom on it is pretty cool.

Ok, one good reason: last time I looked at an Ipod (RL), you needed an specially made cable (one of which comes with the iPod) to connect your iPod to the PC (because the iPod has some sort of new apple monstrosity of a port). So if you lose your iPod cable - KERCHING. Money in the bank for Apple.

Plus, if I stopped using my GBA about two years ago, I doubt I'll want to use a frikkin iPod to play handheld games.

Another good reason! A while back, I was screwing about with a mates iPod nano. I came across this thing to lock the iPod. I figured, "heh, I'll lock him out, and then he'll have to reenter his password to get back in again! Muhahahaha!", like the immature arse I can be at times. But lo and behold, no sooner had I locked the iPod nano (by setting a random number combo - I wasn't looking at the iPod at the time, intentionally), my friend tells me that theres NO PASSWORD TO UNLOCK YOUR IPOD. He had to wait until next weekend to get over to his dads house, get hold of "special" bullshit cable to connect the iPod to the PC so he could unlock it using iTunes! PWNT.

Of course, none of that would happen if they simply had the user define a combination lock when they first start up the iPod, and then show a passcode prompt before they lock the iPod...

Another thing: same friend buys a branded Apple cover for his iPod nano, to prevent it breaking if he ever drops it. However, he's getting changed from PE one day when he drops trou, and the iPod in his pocket drops an entire 3 feet, onto the folds of his creased up trouser legs. O noes! "Ok", he thinks, "I'm fine. I got a protective cover and everything, and besides, I'm sure they're durable enough." He showed it to me after school. It had a hefty dent in the back, and the screen was shattered. It looked as if someone had struck it with a fucking claw hammer.

I could also go on about how much the commercials bug me, how they like to milk the "iPod" label for all it's worth (Ipod original, Ipod mini, Ipod shuffle, Ipod nano, video Ipods... honestly, how bored do you have to be to watch music videos in the middle of town? you must have something better to do than that...), the constant complaints about the batteries which once wore completely down have to be sent off to be recharged (at a price, of course - not sure if this last ones still relevant)... gah. There are more.

Most of these are aimed towards the Ipod Nano, apparently you can recharge 4th generation and above ipods via USB, or something.

It's the same deal for most anything, I got a digital camera for my birthday which has this port that I've never seen before.
Also this doesn't stop people making third-party attachments anyway, which they do, freqeuntly.

It's a small, delicate piece of machinery like anything else, I would expect it to break. Either way, I've dropped mine a few times by accident and it's been fine, I have no "cover" of any sort they look shit anyway.

Apple have sold about 20 million iPods, about 1% of those people will have problems, law of averages say it has to happen.

I went into the extras or features menu (whatever it was called, I only used it twice before it shat itself - this was an iPod nano, by the way), went into something called "lock", or "combination lock", or something. Had six steely-gradiented squares where you entered your numbers. I wouldn't be able to tell you direct instructions.

You could always just ask Sam. I'm sure he'll never forget it :laughcry:

Also, the screen + battery problems (batteries completely wearing out and not being replacable besides via replacing an ipod, sending off to get the battery replaced or getting one of those third party kits to replace the battery) are widespread. I even watched episodes of Watchdog where viewers talked about how dissapointed they were with their iShits. Plus, these people were from the UK; I seem to remember them saying they couldn't even send them off to get the batteries replaced. I believe they had to buy new iPods.

There is no such setting on my iPod, and no mention of it in my manual. I do have a relatively recent Photo iPod too. Maybe they took the feature out for reasons cited?

My old comment about sales still stands. There are widespread problems with PS2 lasers, but how many people care?

Watchdog accuse the iPod of being bad because the default headphones are easily recognisable, fucking retards. I wouldn't listen to a thing they say, they attribute the entire BitTorrent protocol to software piracy as well.

Just because a product "only fails some of the time" doesn't make it acceptable. "It only fails and needs to be rebought in 9/10 case scenarios" would not endear me towards a product. If I was to leave my iPod on by accident (if I had an iPod), and it ran out of battery? I wouldn't bother getting it replaced. I would drop it out of my bedroom window, and write a sweary letter to Apple. Now, I'm not saying that this is the only product which suffers from design flaws, but with the iPod, it just seems to be infamous. Whenever I talk to someone about iPods, the first critisism has always been "yeah, but those batteries cost a lot to be replaced" or "I'm gonna have to send it off to get it recharged, though" (and I've known a fair few people with iPods).

Btw, this is the first time I've heard about PS2 lasers having problems. Just saying.

Yeah well that's not retarded, you must have some pretty weird friends if they think the battery will have to be replaced. Just letting it wind down and totally run out then charging it up fully from the mains does fine.
I'ld like to point out that the exact same thing happens with laptops, and since iPods are just pretty much mini computers (same basic hardware) then I'm not surprised this happens, but it's easily rectified.

I'm not willing to pay a lot of money to have a product fixed that already cost a bundle anyway. (I have actually been considering buying an iPod to smash while filming. I'd never need porno again.)

I haven't seen any other companies doing this with their MP3 players, or anybody else advertising a product to the extent that Apple have the iPod. I mean I know other MP3 players get advertised too, but not as much as the iPod (I guess it's just a game of "spot the large budget", huh?). If I had my own personal award ceramony, it would win the award for "biggest whore".

I bought an iPod because it does exactly what I want it to do, I love the syncing feature of iTunes, and after observing it's responsiveness and simple click-wheel interface after playing with a friends I was dead set on getting one.

Having put iPod Linux onto it, I most certainly do not regret my decison.
