Hello hello,

I like to pop in here from time to time. Like once every 3 months or so. I don't sit on IRC so screw that. I just wanted to let people know that if you haven't tried Unity3D yet, you're mad.

Its a game dev tool which takes all the low level out of game programming, leaving you with just game logic! Awesome!

Easy to learn, C# with MonoDevelop, exports to every platform known to (modern) man.

ta,
Casper

PS: This wasn't meant to be advertising, but yeah I really love this tool.

hmm, I'm certainly going to evaluate it before my next game, but it's a shame it doesn't support Linux.

It's the number one request on their uservoice account: http://feedback.unity3d.com

so hopefully they are considering it seriously.

Hey Dennis, DTM,

Yeah I'm still working with Unity3D. I founded and currently work at Stolen Couch Games (www.stolencouchgames.com) a game studio in Utrecht, the Netherlands. We are making an iPad/iPhone game with Unity (Pro license).

Unity3D is just the bomb. Simply the best game dev platform in years. It has all the power necessary for serious game dev, but is also very user friendly, accessible and easy to pick up. I would absolutely recommend it to everybody interested in making games.

regards,
Casper

I have a samsung tablet. Does it run on Android as well?

I looked at some video tutorials, but I can't stand someone talking in it, so I turned it off :)

God, I just don't have time.

Caspah, is Unity3D easier than XNA?
I will certainly try Unity3D when I have the time.

I checked it, it's a lot of javascript and you can make 3D models using Blender 3D or Cinema 4D and import them.

It's a lot of click 'n drag, but I think you can make some awesome things with it.

You can develop applications for iPhone, pc, android, ...

pretty neat.

@Dennis: Our game won't be running on Android in the near-future, but if it sells really well, we might port it. Android device variance makes testing a pain, so we'll see. The click and drag is only the surface of the visual editor (handy for artists and designers), most serious development happens in code.

@DTM: Cheers mate!

@Zomg: It depends how you define easier. It is definitely faster at getting a prototype game set up so you can test a game idea quickly. As a fairly ADHD 'neat' programmer I love to keep my code clean and simple. Unity3D makes this a lot easier than XNA, where you often have to write your own subroutines for incredibly dull (IMO) crap like GUI code and 3D rendering.

I must say I agree to Caspah. I do felt a lot like "reinventing the wheel" when I made a game using DIV/Fenix/Bennu. When writing a platform engine, it's easy to have a decent physics engine at your disposal. It's always nice you can write your own, but for me I prefer a prebuild engine, ofcourse if they start asking paying licenses for the engine, it's another case, but if it's free, why not use someone else's blood sweat and tears. It's also a different thing. People who program engines and physics systems are not intersted in making a particular game for people to play per se. That was the problem with Fenix/Bennu, imo. People showed off with the engine or system rather than the fun-factor of the game itself.

Looks easy.
