The official booleansoup competition "retro'ed-remake" is declared open! The requirement is - you must take a modern game-type and make a lo-fi or retro version of it.

A definition: retro is anything on consoles before the PS1. We mean old school.

(Also you can use any programming means, though we would like a Windows compatible version for submission on the closing date.)

You have three months duration. The deadline shall be Saturday 15th of November at midnight.

You may do your project in teams, but this obviously affects the prizes if you are a winning team. You will basically have to cope, or share! (though the prizes are not officially chosen yet.)

So you shall be spening the remainder of summer and most of autumn - whiling away those darkening evenings coding and creating the reduced version of your favourite game!

This an excellent idea for a competition. I can't wait to try them all out. Hell, maybe I'll even half arse my way through it.

Quoting RaverDave's ramblings:
Use freeware sounds, royalty free you know....
But use your own graphics, least i would advice it, but never fear, I will not be judging the entries by graphics or sound..just gameplay.

Alas, I installed Fenix.

I just noticed my remake game already exists in Flash... :(

Should that become a problem for judging?

To answer your question, I believe it may have a small influence and depending on how it compares it will either be a positive or a negative influence... as with all games :D

To be fair that Flash game isn't a "demake" as such, it's on-par graphically and gamplay-wise with other 2D games of today.

It's no more a demake of Portal than Codename; Gordon is a demake of Half-Life.

However I think they are perfect examples of what we should be aiming for... another example is Halo:Zero.

I thought doing it like Codename: Gordon was the idea. Well seems to me a good target anyway, like toco suggests.

Well in that case surely this competition is turn-your-favourite-3D-game-into-a-2D-version?

Whereas it isn't see the OP-

You wouldn't have seen anything like Codename Gordon or that Flash version of Portal on the SNES.

I think the SEGA Saturn might be able to produce this quality. Its video system can handle 16bit or even 24bit, but I'm unsure about that. But also it doesn't seem to matter much, as Dave said he will be judging gameplay mostly and won't pay much attention to graphics, which means to me that the game should be 'demaked' gameplay wise. I would find it a great achievement though if the games submitted will equal or surpass this graphical quality.

The Saturn and PSX are part of the same "Generation" as it were, their releases were only a few months apart.

yes, fiona i know that statement was a little narrow. Dave didn't want too many rules and he told me to put that in the competition post. peronally i'd like to see a remake of Codename Gordon quality.

edit: 500th post! all buy me a beer!

AND it is not compatible with an azerty keyboard, but that is not the real problem (since you can change it in your windows language settings), but I just think in a decent game the player should be able to define bind his own keys. Don't you think?
