Does anything actually exist besides GIMP (with it's user interface that I don't really like)
or is GIMP really the only thing there is?

GIMP is good when you get used to it. But I agree the interface is retarded. There's a version called GIMP Shop which has an interface that tries to copy Photoshop.
Check out Inkscape, which is awesome for vectoring.
Blender is good for 3D modelling if you can warp your mind to the way it works.

Photoshop CS2 and below works under Wine, but more importantly - Graphics Gale works under Wine perfectly.

I know about gimpshop. Not all that much better : /
Lets hope the GIMP ui redesign project will someday bring something good.
