Design document

Recently I bought the book titled "The Indie Game Development Survival Guide". I bought it because it has good ratings and overall I wanted to know a bit more about it. Although the books general tone is set to making money from a game that is not my intention. But still it has some great tips and it describes how to actually make use of it.

One of the things described in the book is the design document. In my daily job I have to do that kind of stuff as well so I am not unfamiliar with it. But still, because of this game is a hobby project I never wrote anything done. It was just a thing of going with the flow. But that has a big downside. Because it is never really clear to yourself what you want to do and what the game will goal to.

So today (actually yesterday, but I only created the document file yesterday) I started to actually write down what the game is supposed to be about. I create a flow chart and wrote down all that should be in the game. Although I am not finished yet the biggest part is already done.

Even for small projects it is wise to do something like this. At least for me. Why? Well, if I do not work according to a plan a project never really gets finished. It just makes stuff a lot clearer.

I will try to finish the document in the next couple of days before I will actually continue with the game. There are still a couple of technical problems (no text display under Linux) I need to solve and it really is not very useful to start programming and redoing most of it after the document has been finished.

Well I have the same problem as you. Once the basic mechanism is running you are in the blue, not knowing what to do next. So I am sure this will help me a lot.
