Just saying that Frimkron's idea of a public rating system over a post count is a good idea, but one forum I went on had a similar system. The real problem is, the guy who was rated bottom returned to the forum some years later and was pretty cool but still rated as a complete arsehole.

And I like the idea of all dev tools made equal. It's far more fair and democratic.

Rating is wrong. Some people get rated / rate more than others, total retards can rate, etc.

I'm strongly against this.

Yes, that's a problem, people will end up rating the ones who they see a lot, like regular posters. So the rating system ends up being identical to the post count.

Ok so we won't let people rate each other directly. But how about game rating counts towards your overall rating.

By the way this is what I think should happen to the "utilities" section:

First of all we call that section "Resources".
Then that's split into:

* Articles / tutorials
-they're the same thing essentially and can both use Ferret's module

* Graphics
- This is split into sprites, models and textures and each is a searchable catalogue of resources where each has their own keywords and stuff.

* Sound
- Like "graphics" but split into music, sfx and whatever else we think of.

* Code Examples
- Not sure how to arrange this section yet, but its gonna have tech demos, code snippets and whatever else

* Utilities
- Not 100% sure what will be in here yet. But like you know when people used to make map editors and stuff in div? Well like that. Or something.

* Links
- Lots of user-submittable links arranged into nice categories

* Other resources
- Anything else that we haven't got enough of to make a full section on. Like.. I dunno... design documents and stuff like that.

We could probably keep the same upload page, with a little bit of tweaking here and there. But obviously the mods will have more work to do.

Just a suggestion on how you could do a user rating system:

- Every user has a number of points to give to other users.
- If people have a high rating they could have this shown next to their posts or on the profile page (perhaps in stars or medals in stead of a number).
- The number of points a user can give could be reset every week or month.
- The number of points to give could be depending on how much posts the user has made in that period and for how long he is registered.
- The number of points to give should not be public and giving them away should be anonymous. This would prevent people from keeping points for status or getting people sucking up to you for getting points.
- Moderators should be able to take away a star or medal for bad behaviour.

What about that idea of a wiki I had? Code examples could work with that, infact Links could work with that superbly.

Yeah I was thinking about the wiki idea.... what would we put in it other than code examples and links though?

Yeah I think I like your idea about user ratings PB...

I mean automated ratings for uploading and stuff is all very well, but people might end up just uploading complete crap all the time just to get their brownie points. Maybe user ratings should be the thing that makes the biggest difference.

Frim, I'll be honest, at the moment, crap uploads are better than what's here. I think user ratings on the actual uploads should work to begin with and when/if the site picks up steam and popularity, perhaps zero the ratings and then use user ratings.

If you use my system though, I'd like to update one point (since it has a flaw in it):

Quoting PB:
Just a suggestion on how you could do a user rating system:

- The number of points to give could be depending on how much posts the user has made in that period and for how long he is registered.

Should be:
- Every user has a start-amount of points to give, but this start-amount will increase if the user had spent all his points in the previous period. Above the start-amount the user gets points to give for the posts he made that period.

I say this because the other way around people would register, forget about their account for a couple of years and suddenly have a big influence on the scoring system. The updated point only increases your influence by how commited you are (even if you don't post on the forum).

Well if the points were based on users' ratings of whatever's uploaded then that would solve everything anyway.

Rincewind's mentioned something to me on msn - the idea of having moderators/admin rate uploads as they process them and award points according to that. The reward would be 1, 2, or 3 points and the moderator sees fit. I'm not too sure about this one.

I don't like the rating system either. And the points based on the amount of posts even less. If someone is pwning awesome, but just uses less posts to clear something, or never asks some, he would get less points, but as some stupid 4$$ might spam alot of topics and get billions of points.

Quoting Frim:
the idea of having moderators/admin rate uploads

Yeah but Frim that's only the articles, I'll post the whole idea here:

Games/Wips should give points related to the userrating.

The idea was that if a wip is rated positively, then points are given to the author, if it's rated negatively, then points are taken from the author. With 6/10 or 7/10 as a balance or something.

For articles it is different, if the article is bad then it's rejected anyway, but if it's approved then 1-3 points can be rewarded by the approving moderator.

This way points are only given out to people who make useful contributions to the site, and not just to people who hang around on the forum a lot.

Hm, that's true. Maybe code geniuses should show off then by submitting articles or genius games. :P

The following could be an addition to the game/article based rating system if you also want to cover helpful people on the forum:

---------------------------------------------------------
When one starts a topic, he can tick a box that say 'question, I need help'. The topic starter then can give out a single point to every user who posts a useful and neat solution, but with a max of 1 point per user per topic. Useless replies are given zero points by the topic starter.

I think that's a good idea. People who ask a question are more motivated to give points to helpfull answheres, and people might be more motivated to give a good answher if they get points for it.
I supose it should be visible to the user when a topic is an "I need help" topic, because that gives more motivation to answher it.

Me and Rincewind were discussing the points system and thought it might be a good idea to not make the actual points values visible to other users - so that people dont squabble over single points - and instead just have a visible "rank". This could be a title, or a number of stars, or I quite like the idea of using colours. Each member would have a small coloured blob next to their name indicating their rank. Rince suggested using the standard martial arts belt colours for these - but not everyone will immediately know the order of them. Maybe something along the lines of bronze, silver, gold, platnum or whatever. Alternatively if we wanted to just have titles these could be variable types - seeing as its a programming site. Bitflag, Char, Word, Int, Long, etc - or whatever. Just some ideas.

I second the idea of Variable Types names, very amusing. O_O Or just to throw in another idea, which I don't like more than the Variable Types names: Military rankings (stripes, stars...).

Variable type names? Newbies start out as Booleans (like a padawan but worse :P) and end up as 80 bit unsigned floating point variables? Whaharahagfdfrg.

Ferret remember how you had that bug report/feature suggestion thing on Pokmon Sanctuary? Maybe that's an idea for BS... then again I guess the forum fulfills that role =/
