Just in case you aren't checking the frontpage: The competition has officially started!

Remember that you can join this competition any moment during the time it runs, so if you feel like entering in the middle of the competition then please do so! Good luck to all of you.

These are the themes:

Dinosaurs
Internet
God
Pirates and/or Ninjas

Be sure to check the competition page for the full explanations!

You must chose one of these themes for your game. Incorporating multiple ones is allowed, but won't earn you bonus points. Oh, and maybe this is the time to create a worklog.

So does anyone have any cool ideas yet? :aharr:

Apart from dinosaur-ninja-terrorists who must capture internet-pirates and kill them to become a martyr because God demands it... not really.

Hi, i dont post much here, im the spanish guy who made Masters of Invento-Fighting (see WIP section), and i´ll probably take part in the compo.

I think i´ll make an action ninja game, starring: Jesus Christ!

Provisional name: Jesus Christ Gaiden (sounds better to me in spanish: "Jesucristo Gaiden" XD)

A little preview (well, at this time this is all i have :P):

Just one question.....how much of a manganime-freaks are the judges? Im going to put a lot of manganime references and jokes about popular series, you know...the idea is something like..."If the Bible were written by some Akira Toriyama-like guy?"

Is jesus going to smack people on their heads with that wooden cross or is it pinned to his back? :P That's looking very good, you're quite a pixel artist aren't you?

Uhm, I wouldn't get your hope up. :eyeroll: I don't think any admins/mods are into anime much. But maybe judges can call in a third person friend who does know his anime...or something.

Edit: And good luck to you!

Hi, can we use character generators (for graphics?)? Also, what about pre-made textures/skyboxes if apporopriate?

Character generators? You mean those online things where you can choose the head, hair, beard, pants of a human graphic etc? Or more something like the man generator in DIV2?

I'll get back on you about the textures/skyboxes, would have to ask the others.

Rincewind must speak with the Gods! Not implying he is not a God or anything!

I think royalty free stuff should be allowed, it's something everyone has access too... to not allow it would be to distinguish between coding and art! Coding relies on stock materials/libraries. Coding is an art. :annoyed:

But we must await our judgement. :praise:

Yeah, I agree with DTM here.

Royalty free stuff is going to give you more quality games. And as DTM said, everyone got access to it.

i think that all entries should be made from scratch, even if your own graphics are crap, the first point of any game is the playability factor, not how nice and crisp the royalty free graphice are, by all means you should be able to use then as a refference point and something to gain idears and inspration from.

even if you are crap at art, it shows the fact that you are willing to have a go and expericment with your own graphics.

I think I agree with Puniks when it comes to royalty free graphics, but music is a totally different thing. I, and I think most of the others around here, have never made PC music before, and I think I need at least a week or two to make a couple of tunes because I need to get myself acquinted with the software and the fact that I need to really push my memory and hearing to come up with something that sounds better than playing the game with the sound off. Being able to use some tunes from the modarchive or someplace would save me a lot of time and work that I don't like to do and gives me two weeks extra to do what I like best about this compo, the programming.

Oh, and if you have to input all the art yourself for a character generator, then I think it's a tool like, say, Photoshop and should be allowed. That said, where can I find this awesome character generator? Else I might have to use DIV2's. :)

The gods of the Olympus have spoken and me as mere mortal can only agree with them: No, premade textures or skyboxes are not allowed. It still stands: everything should be created from scratch. This is a competition, and it is about what you can do. There are plenty of texture generators out there, not to mention using Terragen to create a nice skybox. The DIV2 character 'generator' isn't allowed as it is a very clearly pre-made model (all it does is stick the texture to a pre-made model!).

It's also incredibly easy to record some tunes by playing some applications like Vpiano, even if you're no musical prodigy. Where some might have more trouble with graphics, others might have it with sound or music. You are allowed to form teams of 2 so you can team up with anyone who can do his sound/graphs.

It is your OWN MADE texture though. Is it also forbidden to use filters in Photoshop?

Of course you are allowed to use Photoshop filters Moogle. You're free to use any tools as long as you don't use pre-made graphics.

The DIV2 man generator is a totally different thing, it just sticks textures to an extremely non-basic pre-made 3D model of a man.

That is what I'm saying, the character generator is basically the same as a filter. It applies a pre-determined operation to the input you give it. Now it is a more advanced filter, I agree, but the basics are exactly the same. If I use generate clouds in Photoshop and use that as a skybox, is that legal? Did I make that myself? No.

I won't be using the character generator probably, but I think it's a tool like any other and should be treated as one.

That said, back to work :)

Surely poser is the same as the Div charcter generator?

I agree that this is silly - the graphics would be by the user and would look very different to the original.

I also posted a question in the news section, following a question about buying media -

Quote:
How can the judges prove that a piece of media wasn't created by the user??

It would be far simpler for the judges to decide that free media is acceptable. I have a musically inclined friend that is happy to give me music but doesn't want to be part of a team.

Surely at the end of the day, gameplay is the most important aspect. Media is important, but without a decent game, it just end up as eye/ear candy.

It would be better for the user to state that all media is was orignal and copyright free or state that permission has been given to use a media.

Hi,
With the character generator I was meaning one I found where you can put different basic shapes together to make what you want.

Maybe you could allow free media, but just make it so you loose say, two points or something in the graphics section (I do agree that someone who created EVERYTHING from scratch should get a better score that one who just coded and ripped everything else)

More clarification on character generators/poser will come soon, there might have been a slight misunderstanding.

Using free media is not allowed, you have to make (create/generate) everything yourself, that's part of the competition. The rules are not discussable, I can only clarify them for you.

Another quick question.

When you state dinosaurs do you actually mean prehistoric creatures? (these would include flying creatures like pteranodons, archeopteryx and swimming creatures like plesiosaurs and ichtheosaurs etc. etc.)

I would like to include a couple, but if it's strictly "dinosaurs", then that rules out an awful lot of creatures that are wrongly placed into this category.
