Rock music? ROCK MUSIC? Where is the "electronic punk clash" guitar themed forum? You know the easy way to get people to join your forum, specifically male programmers, is to tell them there be girls in them hills. It is a forum full of hot women, right? Quoting Frimkron: No apostrophe in "photos". Or in any plural for that matter, including "wants," "pictures," and "smilies." I find the board rather nauseating, but I posted anyway in case there are any hot womans there. ____________ boredome is the bitter fruit of too much routine |

Why is there no apostrophe in photo surely it is an abbreviation of photograph so putting in an apostraphe is fine, but, since the abbreviation has been in common usage so long it is part of the language so shouldn't have an apostraphe man I love talking crap. ____________ I see 57,005 people. |

But isn't graph an abbreviation of graphic? In which case it ends with a c. I don't know what that has to do with anything, because my English isn't that good, but still I thought I'd mention it...

It could be abbreviated but I don't think it would be recognised by many people since most people associate graph's with charts of some sort. In the case of photograph we have photo meaning light and graph meaning recording, I think. ____________ I see 57,005 people. |

Yeah you're probably right... What probably led to my stupid mistake is that the Dutch word for graph is "grafiek", which sounds a lot like graphic. Although I do think that a graph usually is a graphic too, but a graphic isn't a graph. Also you can call a "graaf" a "grafiek", but not the other way around... Unfortunately my dictionary doesn't translate the synonymous for "graaf" which also means count. As in Earl, not as in "Tellen"... I don't know the English word for the other meaning of "graaf", but it's a collection of points which may or may not be connected in any way. That's it for Dutch class today, I asume you have learned nothing, otherwise I'd advice you'd better check the forum name ____________ |

http://www.etymonline.com/inde … owed_in_frame=0 graph (n.) Look up graph at Dictionary.com 1878, shortening of graphic formula (see graphic). The verb meaning "charted on a graph" is from 1889. Related: Graphed; graphing. Would the 'graaf' version of the collection of points not simply be called 'a node tree'? You know, like those in sorting algorithms. Furthermore: http://www.grammar-monster.com … breviations.htm There seems to be a consensus around it being ok using apostrophes to help your reader. I would gather 'photos' is ok here. http://www.oxforddictionaries.com/words/apostrophe "These are the only cases in which it is generally considered acceptable to use an apostrophe to form plurals: remember that an apostrophe should never be used to form the plural of ordinary nouns, names, abbreviations, or numerical dates." Continued discussion on this grammatical topic is welcome. [Edited on June 9, 2014 by Zomg] ____________ |
