Working video. A lot has changed but all will become clear!

Imagine a game like UT2004/TRON tank battles but the only flying vehicles are gunstars! I'm not crazy, this will work!

An early video for my project, the game Starfighter - inspired by the Motion Picture "The Last Starfighter" (1984). Set in a time some years after The Last Starfighter battles the Kodan Armada, a faction of Starfighters break away and wage war against the Star Alliance. Eventually involving real rocky/desert terrian and ground installations, Starfighter will feature team-based (up to 24 players) vehicle and dogfighting space craft. You have the choice (on either side) to deploy a tank, or a gunstar vehicle. You can have any number of either Tanks or Gunstars. No Netplay elements are planned for the first version (so you play alongside Blue team vs Red Team), simply bot ai and various maps, differing only in layout.

Inside the Game Engine.

Right.

This is the basic Gunstar (I can't spend too much time texturing and shaping it to perfection... yet) and it's there in DarkGDK with my again basic "deep space" texture.

I now have a plain behind the display. At first i thought i'd make my own skysphere but i've been getting some kind of texture stretching. This makes deep space look.... not quite real.

I will be using maths equations (along with lovely gdk functions) to make the camera (player point of view) and all objects align with a plain that will scroll the deepspace texture. Also, the plain shall rotate to respond to "rolling" movements. So that's X, Y and Z rotations covered, (not all of Z movements, but Z is the depth plane so IT DOSEN'T MATTER)

A bit hairy? Yes, but at least it will look like deepspace to the tee!

I've started coding this... wish me luck!

The Gunstar.

Wow, this is fucking geeky of me. For my end-of-year project I am making a game along the rough theme of the film "The Last Starfighter".

I have been hard at work modelling on Wings3d for the equivalent of about 7 hours and after two days have come up with a pretty natty version of a Gunstar.

That is a pretty annoying Wings3d render of it. I'll be getting on some C++ DarkGDK code, and have an engine render done in no time.

The gameplay is to be 3d third-person space shootem, which will be arcade-like and mission based. Initially only 3 types of enemy will be available. Quite simply defeat the fleet, get to the large command ship.

I only have 5 weeks until i hand this game/project in!
