You do have a good example here though of where the rules seem to fall short: it seems hard to create a sound like that yourself. Still it cannot be allowed for the following reason: If this would be allowed it is unfair to disallow other royalty free sounds, royalty free graphics, royalty free music, etc. As for a analogy with graphics: It's also hard to draw a military base!

Doing all from scratch is part of the challenge, and all competitors will have to cope with it.

I do have an idea for you though of how to create a shot gun noise. As it is allowed to use your midi bank for music and sounds: in the standard windows midi bank you will find 'instruments' of guns, explosions, helicopter, bells and a lot more!

Why is it allowed to use midi standard sounds that comes with microsoft and not with another product (ie standard sounds/wavs in fruity loops)? Can you please explain the difference very thoroughly?

First of all I am not talking about midi songs/sounds in your Windows folder here Dennis (!) , but about the midi bank of your soundcard / Windows virtual midi bank. It's a set of virtual instruments that are used when playing/creating MIDI files, so different instruments can be used in tunes. Normally this midi bank is embedded on your sound card - but in case your sound card does not offer it there's the exact same thing built-in in Windows, only virtual and not on the card. It consist out of one tone per instrument, which then can be played on different frequencies to create different tone heights. You could check out this little program and try out different patches (1-127) to explore what your midi bank consists of.

It's uncomparable with basic samples that come with fruity loops, as those are small tune fragments (multiple tones, multiple instruments, basically just very small pieces of songs) while the midi bank offers instruments(tone fragments) to create your own tunes.

However, as for the basic samples that come with fruity loops (nobody said there are forbidden):

I am confused, because in your post you imply opposing statements.
Here you imply they are not allowed:

So...basic samples of Fruity Loops are allowed or not?

And for clarity: what is being thought of as a basic sample of Fruity Loops? I was thinking about a guitar snare sound or a piano. Perhaps a basedrum.

I explained that only because Dennis asked me to "explain the difference very thoroughly" and he didn't seem to understand what the midibank is and how it differs from samples that come with music programs. Since there is a difference between the two (even though they're both allowed), I thought I'd explain the difference between them.

I don't own Fruity loops myself, and I have no idea what samples come with it, but in general I mean those that last a couple of seconds (roughly 0-5 secs) are allowed...could have a small drum rhythm (when repeated), or a mini tune. Basically the samples are building blocks of a higher level than single tones, but they are still very basic and by no means a song.

My conclusion is that DTM is allowed to use the shotgun sound, only when it is in a library of Fruity Loops, or another external program. I understand what it all means by being creative and such, but there is no way you can ever find out someone created the sound himself or not. You must just hope he didn't because when he is really really good and DID made the sound himeself and then disqualify him, that would be real unfair.

You could also fire a real shotgun and record it. :yay:

You were the one that brought up fruity loops. You're forgetting about the midi bank again, which isn't a program. You guys really should check out the gun instruments in the midi bank. :what:

Here an example I just made in 5 seconds: shotgun shot. Don't y'all steal it now, it's mine. :P Adding a reload sound wouldn't be hard either.
